DVF + Warhol

  • "When Studio 54 opened in 1977, Andy and I used to go. It was the greatest nightclub I ever went to. It was big, it was the time of disco, and they would only ever let very beautiful people in... What you wore depended on where you went before because Studio 54 was a place where you ended up after a party. If you went to a ball, you went in your ballgown. I used to go in a disco dress with cowboy boots. I wore a lot of cowboy boots to Studio 54" - Diane Von Furstenberg, via Harper's Bazaar Travel Edition Aug 2010, UK (photo via)

just kids

  • interview magazine spoke with the artist, patti smith, about her new memoir, just kids, and her chaotic relationship with the love of her life, robert mapplethorpe. it was fabulous and inspiring. check out the interview here. buy the book here.

"Because even as a kid, I wanted to be an artist. I also did not want to be trapped in the ’50s idea of gender. I grew up in the ’50s, when the girls wore really bright red lipstick and nail polish, and they smelled like Eau de Paris. Their world just didn’t attract me. I hid in the world of the artist—first the 19th-century artists, then the Beats. And Peter Pan." - patti smith

party on

  • The adorable stud in the pirate hat is my little brother, Mike. He is a raging enthusiast and a lover of life, tennis, and bread. His moves on the dance floor can make even the shyest man want to kick up his feet and join the party. He is my biggest fan, and the first one to give me a hug when I come home. He has become famous for his rare ability of being able to talk to anyone of any age and make them feel blissfully important. My thoughtful, big hearted brother turns fifteen today. Happy birthday kiddo! Can't wait for fifteen more years of belly busters.

missed connections

Messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand; the modern equivalents are the funny, sad, beautiful, hopeful, hopeless, poetic posts on Missed Connections websites. Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I'm trying to pin a few of them down. - sophie blackall
